Opening comments:

Jordan starts with a story of hard drive failure woe. Earlier in the week, his MacBook Pro hard drive started emitted a series of clicking noises and stopped working. Thankfully, Jordan had a backup made using Super Duper (a program we talked about on Episode 5) and was able to run his entire system off of the external backup drive. Though laptopless – Jordan was running at full capacity during the show by borrowing a friends laptop and again running his system off of the backup drive – thanks to Carl Shipp of Carl’s Lawn Care Service for the generous loaner!)The moral of the story – backup your computer!

Jordan and Jake also wanted to comment of their choice of beverage for this show. The folks at Brain Toniq sent over a case of their non-caffinated engery drink called… Brain Toniq. Both Jake and Jordan have been impressed with this concoction, since it brings a clear head and sharp wit…. without the side effects of caffiene. You can get Brain Toniq directly from their website here.

Caller – Caleb – Xbox 360 vs PS3:

Caleb is trying to decide between the Xbox 360 and the Playstatoin 3. He’s interested in playing high caliber first person shooter titles with premium graphics. Our pick? The Xbox 360. Some of the best action titles are released for the Xbox 360 (the halo series is a prime example) and the multiplayer components make it an even better pick for social action gaming.

Holiday Shopping Guide – Our favorite games:

Jordan and Jake listed some of their favorite game titles on the show and included a small expose on “open world gaming”. You can listen to the show for the full description, but here’s the list: (Note: we always recommend reading the reviews online for any game title before buying – we use www.gametrailers.com and www.ign.com)

Mass Effect (Xbox 360 and PC) – a perfect open world game that captured our imagination and drew us into it’s SciFi environment. Decisions you make influence the rest of the game, making you really feel like a part of the Mass Effect world.
Assassins Creed (Xbox 360, PC, PS3) – this first person action stealth game, set during the crusades, has an intruiging story and inventive gameplay
Fable (Xbox, PC, and Fable 2 for XBox 360) – A fun action/fantasy game in which you decide if you are going to be good or evil. Shape your character as you play and become the hero you want to be.
Call of Duty 4 or 5 (Xbox 360, PC, OSX, PS3) – the quintisential classic action FPS
Halo series (Xbox 360, PC) – amazing storyline, fast pace gameplay, industry leading multiplayer
The Orange Box (Xbox 360, PC) – this $30 bundle of games from Valve software – offers the most bang for buck you’ll find anywhere. We especially like Portal and Team Fortress 2 out of the included games
Skate (Xbox 360, PS3) – if you’re fed up with the unrealistic Tony Hawk series, skate will please the hardcore part of your heart. Skate offers a more realistic feel to skateboarding in a video game. Rather than mashing a button to do a trick you must use careful control with the thumbsticks to do impressive moves.
Crysis (PC) – a visually stunning PC only title that combines story, amazing graphics, and innovative gameplay (warning: requires a relatively powerful system to play)
The Sims series – A life simulation game
Spore – Starting out as a single cell organism, you must raise your creation up through the ranks of evolution until finally you become a space traveling civilization. Fun game for all ages
