Caller – David – DVR Software:
How to record TV onto your computer with an HDTV Tuner card running Windows XP Media Center on a Dell Inspiron 531.
Either use the built in software within Media Center or search for a good third party application. A blogging site, Lifehacker, recommends using Sage TV. Although the program costs $80, Lifehacker says “we like SageTV for its feature set, stability, and Windows/Linux support. Aside from its very active support forums, you can also get support directly from a real company, which is always a nice option. Out of the box, SageTV installs as easily as any Windows program, and configuring your capture card with SageTV is a breeze.” Find out more about building the perfect DVR here.
Caller also wanted to know: how to use your HDTV as a second display for viewing HD Podcasts. We recommend using a graphics card with two video outputs. One for your primary PC display, and the other for going to your HDTV. Check out this video card from Newegg.com. This is a very powerful graphics card that supports two DVI out’s and includes an HDMI adapter. After installing this card all you will need is a cable with the appropriate connectors on both ends to connect from your graphics card to your HDTV.
As for the audio, the Caller already has surround sound support on his Dell Inspiron, but if he just wants to put standard stereo audio to his TV, all he just needs is a PC audio out to RCA in cable: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=2004&sku=40615
Finally, to subscribe to a ton of free HD video podcasts to watch on that high definition TV – we recommend downloading Apple’s iTunes software. Even if you don’t have an iPod – iTunes is worth having for their large podcast selection.
Movie Review:
Listen to the episode to hear us talk about the movie Eagle Eye.
Tech Tip – Eagle Eye reminds us to stay safe on the web:
While talking about Eagle Eye the topic was brought up about privacy on the web. Who is watching us and do we really have internet privacy? With the rise of Web 2.0 applications, websites being able to interact with one another, security issues are likely to increase. On the most basic level of surfing the internet your name is associated with an IP Address, which can be a risk within itself.
To stay safe on the web remember to always check the privacy setting when signing up for a new account on any website. Always run your antivirus and adaware programs to keep you protected. Avoid accessing sensitive data on public computers, you wouldn’t want to forget to log out of your bank account and have the next user have unlimitted access to your funds!
For virus and spyware protection we recommend the program NOD32 by ESET.com.
Next week:
More to come about Antivirus software, and, we will explain how to choose a well-rounded, pre-built PC that will fit all your needs.
